Native Hawaiian Career & Technical Education Program

Service Providers

The ALU LIKE, Inc., Native Hawaiian Career & Technical Education Program (NHCTEP), established in 1986, prepares Native Hawaiians to be a competitive force in the workplace through completion of rigorous and culturally appropriate career and technical education (CTE) programs.

Currently composed of a consortium of 6 service providers, NHCTEP provides technical assistance for ongoing implementation of CTE programs, including community college tutoring, mentoring and support services, vocational education in health careers and the maritime industry, as well as internship opportunities in natural resources, medical assisting and the maritime industry.

Program Highlights

Background

In 1984, the U.S. Congress enacted the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education and Applied Technology Education Act authorizing the creation of vocational education programs to improve the employment status of Native Hawaiians. Through Title 1 Section 116 (h) of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education-National Programs Division awards the set-aside funds through a competitive grant process.
